Schools
In Lee County, buying a house in a particular neighbourhood does not assign your child to a particular school. This catches relocating families out constantly.
Read this before you read anything else about Lee County schools. The School District of Lee County uses a school choice and lottery system, not strict neighbourhood zoning. Families submit a Choice Application through the district’s parent portal and rank their preferred schools. Where a school has more applicants than seats, placement is decided by lottery, and students who aren’t placed go onto a waitlist. Your address does not guarantee your school.
How it works
Choice, zones and proximity
The district is divided into three zones — West, East and South — each with subzones. The zones are large: 169, 287 and 282 square miles respectively. Within a zone, a high school student has on average around four high schools available across their assigned and adjacent subzones.
The open enrolment window closes in January, with placements running through late August and further placements at the end of the first and second quarters. If you are relocating on a school-year timetable, that January date is the one to put in your calendar — long before you would normally be thinking about a builder contract.
Proximity is a factor and the district has been actively revising how much it counts. A proposal brought to the board in December 2025 would tighten transportation zones; the district estimated it would affect around 1,316 of 30,427 high school students, who would lose district busing if they chose a school outside their transportation zone.
Schools in the Gateway area
The schools most often associated with the Gateway area are Gateway Elementary School (PreK–5), Paul Laurence Dunbar Middle School (6–8) and Gateway High School (9–12), which opened in 2021. Gateway Charter High School also serves the area and offers Cambridge AICE programmes, and Crosspointe Academy is a private K4–12 option.
We are listing these as schools in the area, deliberately. Daniels Creek has no address, no plat and no assignment, and it sits outside the Gateway census boundary. Any site telling you today which school your future Daniels Creek home is zoned for is inventing it.
Verify before you rely on it. School assignment, choice rules, zone boundaries and transportation eligibility all change. Confirm current assignment and application deadlines directly with the School District of Lee County before making a decision that depends on them.
